CRAY ANGLERS
CONSERVATION GROUP RIVER CLEANS
River Cleans
are a bit different to the normal work party anglers take part in.
First they
have Health and Safety and carry out risk assessments before and
on the morning of the clean ups.
The focus
is on litter and larger debris items, cones, trolleys, fridges etc.
First aid
trained volunteers are on hand. Gloves, litter pickers, bin sacks,
wheel barrows, rakes, grapples, boots, waders and chest waders,
even dry suits are available.
Fresh water
and anti bacterial solution, hand towels, sharps boxes, throw lines,
life jackets are provided.
The local
council provides skips.
All participants
must be on time to be Health and Safety briefed, sign in and sign
out.
In addition
to the key volunteers, the public is also invited to join in. Not
only do they help clean up, but along the way the learn about the
river environment. Under 16s we always insist parents/guardians
remain present.
The CACG
now has 13 river keeper volunteers, men and women from teens to
65+. Most are anglers but some are not. They carry out day to day
litter picking, debris removal, monitoring and reporting pollution
and enviro-crime, wildlife/fish sightings etc.
Also if
there is an influx of debris or the odd motor bike, they can team
up and remove it ASAP rather than let it remain until the next organised
the River Clean. They also carry out habitat work, tree management
and other such activities, some even sit on local community forums
now, advising the council.
