ANGLING BODIES, RELATED ORGANISATIONS AND ABBREVIATIONS

Many of you will be familiar with the abbreviations used in various documents on this site, postings to the bulletin boards and in reports prepared by SAA. Some, however, may not be aware of the full names, or how those organisations fit with the other angling bodies.  The following will answer those questions.

The recognised Governing Bodies for the sport of angling in England are :

NFA
National Federation of Anglers - responsible for Coarse angling

NFSA
National Federation of Sea Anglers -responsible for Sea angling

S&TA
Salmon & Trout Association - responsible for Game Angling

These three organisations work together on matters of common interest such as development, training and education as the Angling Governing Bodies, AGB.

All three receive independent Grant Aid from Sport England for their individual and joint development programmes and are represented at the European Anglers Alliance (EAA).

The EAA was created to represent conservation issues direct with the European Community (EC) in Brussels and they do this through a political lobbyist who is jointly funded by the EAA and The European Fishing and Tackle Trade Association (EFTTA).

The NFSA works together with the Irish Federation of Sea Anglers (IFSA), Scottish Federation of Sea Anglers (SFSA) and the Welsh Federation of Sea Anglers (WFSA) as The Sea Angling Liaison Committee of Great Britain and Ireland (SALC).  The NFSA is the secretariat for SALC and is responsible for liaising on all matters which affect sea anglers within the four nations and for annually organising the Home Nations Boat & Shore Internationals.

The NFSA is also affiliated to the World Governing Body for Angling, Confederation Internationale de la Peche Sportive (CIPS) whose secretariat is based in Rome, through its sea federation, Federation International de la Peche Sportive en Mer (FIPS-M) the secretariat for which is based in Luxembourg.  CIPS are responsible for organising the World Championships for all disciplines of angling.
