SAA seek a commitment from the major political parties to
publicly endorse the importance and social and economic benefits
of angling and to support considerably increased public support
for the sport and its management.
SAA seek a commitment from the major political parties to
guarantee the protection of angling and anglers from extreme
animal rights activists, and to ensure that the public is properly
informed about the sport.
SAA seek a commitment from the major political parties to a
strategy for managing bird predation on fish stocks to be
developed by the Government in partnership with fisheries, angling
and conservation interests and the Environment Agency.
SAA seek a commitment from the major political parties for
adequate financial support from the Government for the Environment
Agency’s fisheries work. Funding which reflects the importance of
this work to society as a whole and allows the financial burden
carried by anglers to be cut by at least half.
SAA seek endorsement of “negotiation, payment and the
acceptance of responsibility” as the right way for securing access
to inland waters without public rights of navigation.
SAA seek the development of more sustainable farming practices
to reduce overgrazing, pollution, siltation, abstraction and
eutrophication.
SAA seek changes to the management of other water based
recreations so that wherever it is necessary to impose close
seasons for fishing to protect fish stocks and wildlife, other
activities will be constrained as well.
SAA seek equal status for recreational sea fishing with
commercial sea fishing in the EC, full representation on the EC
Fisheries Committee, and recognition of the importance of the
sustainability of fish stocks for recreational sea fishing as well
as for commercial fishing.
SAA seek a ban on the use of monofilament gill nets in all EC
waters.
SAA seek a thorough revision of legislation governing the
importation and movement of all live freshwater fish and eels,
including ornamental varieties, and the implementation of
effective controls.
SAA seek a ban on the sale of rod caught fish, the introduction
of a carcass tagging scheme, and the introduction of a bag limit
for salmon rod anglers during the next parliament.
SAA seek internationally agreed controls on marine fish farming
to protect wild salmon and sea trout stocks and the food fish used
to produce farm feeds.
